Welcome to the blog for the Van Trekker. I have created this website as a diary and a way to share my hopes, dreams, and experiences with others.
I am in the process of changing my life to that of a van dweller. In the coming years I plan to semi-retire in my mid to late 40s and assume a nomadic existence while living in a cargo van. Many dozens of hours have been spent dreaming about this endeavor and I am excited to take each baby step along the way to the ultimate lifestyle of freedom and financial security.
Let me take a minute to introduce myself. I was born in Cedar Rapids in the mid 1960s where I have spent most of my life. My first real job was as an electronics technician at a defense contractor where I stayed for over a decade. I also worked for another six and a half years as a computer programmer and software tools administrator. After suffering some setbacks including the onset of bipolar disorder, it became apparent that long hours and high stress jobs would not cut it. I have been employed as a night supervisor for the last five plus years at a gas station in Iowa City. It’s a lot of fun!
Along the journey thus far, I’ve picked up a number of skills that will serve me well while enjoying the van dwelling lifestyle. Some of them include:
Automotive mechanical repair (25 + years of being a home mechanic)
Electrical and electronic design and repair with many years of experience
Basic plumbing skills
Basic carpentry and sheet metal skills
These are some of the kinds of skills that are needed for successful existence in a permanent camping type environment.
So as we progress, you will see my evolving from a Wannabe van dweller to a part time van dweller to a full time Van Trekker. My cat Jesse James will be accompanying me as we seek out new places and experiences together.
