Starting the Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is a great time to test out the Trekker Van.

To start with, I drove across town and stopped at a gas station that I knew had wifi.  I parked across the street at a bar and used the wifi booster antenna to snitch a little Internet action…

Just down the street is a 24 hour grocery store.  They have a Red Box which is like the Van Camper’s best friend in terms of quick, cheap movie rentals with a zillion locations.  I rented Cop Out (Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman).  It was a pretty cool movie.

I had purchased a single frozen slice of lemon meringue pie so that was enjoyed during the movie.  After the movie, I went to bed.  The 12V Endless Breeze fan worked perfectly.  It kept things cool.  The only problem was that for some reason I could not get comfortable sleeping with my head at the back of the van.  No problem; I flipped around so I was nearer the bulkhead. That did the trick and it was difficult to wake up in the morning!  As I got out of the van, I encountered a grocery store employee who is an acquaintance.  He said nobody inside even knew the van was outside all night and would not have cared.  He thought it was cool and thought my van would be great for drinking or smoking reefer… I’ll have a drink but will pass on the reefer… No need for trouble with Johnny Law.

I used the 600W Haier microwave oven to cook a quick pizza pocket sandwich for breakfast.  While convenient, the idea is to use the microwave as little as possible.  The goal this time was just to see how the microwave performed and how the batteries were affected. Two minutes of cooking time didnt hurt the batteries a bit but the Iota battery charger did notice the drop in voltage (according to a rapid LED flash).  I can run the microwave but it does pack a whallop.

After a quick touch up charge, I’m camping again tonight but this time in the driveway.  The van is a quiet little refuge.  The cats are in the house and though I love them, it’s nice to have some time away!  Right now Charlies Angels 2000 is playing the Blu Ray machine and I’m using the wifi booster to grab Internet from the trailer.  Soon the trailer will be sold and the Internet will be from the coffee shop nearby but the van will be just as comfortable.  That is a reassuring thought.

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"
