Happy (slightly late) New Year 2013

I know this is a little late but Happy New Year to all!  I hope 2013 finds you in the best of health and happiness.

So far it’s been a hectic winter season and the time is flying by.  Now seemed like a good time to pass along a few updates about what is going on with the van and blog as well as some plans for the coming year for personal improvement.

Getting healthier.  First of all, thanks to a friend at LMJ Enterprises for a donation to help keep the effort going to raise $605 for diabetes this year.  According to the scale, I’ve put on a few pounds during the cold months but nothing that can’t be shed.  The goal for this year is to lose another 60.5 pounds from last fall’s total.  The effort is underway now and will be ramping up, particularly as the weather starts to warm in a few weeks.

Saving money.  This week I saved a dollar.  The second week of the year I will be saving $2.  The third week, $3.  The last week of the year $52 will be set aside.  By the time next year rolls around, the account will have $1378 in it.  There is no definite plan for the funds, but perhaps a weight loss reward would be a nice expenditure.

Van improvements.  A number of van improvements are slated for the coming year, but three come to mind right now.

  • Clothing storage.  I am considering removing the passenger’s seat and replacing it with an “L” shaped storage cabinet (similar shape to a bucket seat) for stowing folded and hanging clothing.  (Spring or Summer 2013)

  • Seating.  A viable chair option was found for the cargo / sleeping area of the van.  It will be great to have a comfortable little seat in here for reading books and eating meals.   There is a little construction required so there will be a post with pictures and details.    (Spring 2013)

  • Generator box.  The wooden generator box (on the cargo rack behind the van) will be replaced with a locking, aluminum diamond plate container.   It will be customized with a vent and powered fan to allow for generator operation while parked or in motion.  Various options are being considered including a larger box with a second section used for storing the Mr. Heater water heater system.  (by March, 2013)

Van Trips.  For now, there won’t be much traveling till spring.  Other than trips to the usual haunts, I am thinking about touring extreme southeast Iowa along the Mississippi River and Missouri border.  Later, in early June, my sister and I are going to be visiting the town of Vallisca, the site of a horrific axe murder back about 100 years ago.  Vallisca is in southwest Iowa, not far from Omaha.  Sis wants to sleep there at the murder house.  I am going to sleep there, too, but in a van outside.

Blog changes.  There are not a lot of changes planned to the blog other than shifting recipes from this page to the recipes page.  As some may have noticed, another subtle change was the removal of the voting options for the blog posts.  If a post was of interest or totally stupid, please comment or email me directly (vantrekkerbrad@aol.com   or Brad52317@aol.com )

That’s about it for now.  I hope 2013 is a terrific one for the readers.  Take care.   I was going to say “follow your dreams” but a person doesn’t always have to be that organized.  Hit the road and let your dreams catch up and lead you on.  God bless!

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"

Happy New Year to you, too, Brad.

Your van improvements list looks good. Especially the chair. Someplace comfortable to sit is the most important thing to me.
