Hot Dogs and Cool Cats

RomeoWelcome and thanks for stopping by.  Meet kitty “Romeo”… a grey and white “tuxedo” style cat. Serena and I encountered him on our current camping trip to the Dubuque, Iowa area.

Serena is feeling so much better.  After a near death experience with Frontline flea medication, she’s recovering quickly.  Her appetite is back.  The fur is velvety again, the “purr machine” is working, and she has more energy than ever.  I had promised her a short little camping trip when she was feeling better.  We spent last night at Swiss Valley Campground just west of Dubuque.  Serena purred most of the night.

Hot DogsAfter we arrived, I built a fire comprised totally of cardboard scraps from the move to the trailer house.  Now that’s recycling!

Serena I both love hot dogs – the more expensive, the better – so I bought some premium links.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have any hot dog “pokers” in the van.  After igniting the cardboard, the frankfurters were roasted on some non-stick aluminum foil placed directly on the fire.  It worked just fine and the cardboard povided a few minutes of lovely warmth.

Kisses me on the lips

Jesse has a habit of kissing your nose than going for the lips… Ick…

After a blissful night’s sleep, Serena and I are going to drive along the Mississipi a bit and see the sights.  It doesn’t look like the leaves are turning very fast so we might just go downstream and do a little fishing.   There are a couple of trout streams not far from here.  I might see if we can bring a little something back for Mr. Jesse.

It’s been so therapeutic to get away.  Today is Monday –  a day off from work following a positively brutal weekend at the fast food job.  If you are older and a non-smoker, it’s all but assured you will be expected to work alone covering for the kids who don’t show up.  The ones who do make it in will be outside (with the managers) smoking.  When that happens, I just grab a Diet Coke, go slower and let the orders back up (which gets the managers in trouble!) … Then I go camping and relax!  Life’s too short to worry about whether it takes 60 seconds or 160 seconds to get a hamburger.  I’d rather make ’em right than make ’em fast!

Have a great day and enjoy the autumn season!

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"

Nice to go camping for a little while or a long while. Did the kitty belong to someone? I’m surprised you didn’t bring it home. 🙂 Hope you caught some fish.

I have a trip planned for the week of the 13th yippee!

Hi Jo. It sure is nice to be gone for even just a few hours. It helps a lot! I’ll bet you are looking forward to the 13th!

The kitty appeared to be a country dweller. He was feral but very talkative. Jesse would have been pretty upset if there was another cat in the house. Serena is doing great and really had a good time. The leaves will be changing colors next week and hopefully she and I will be going to Decorah (or to that new favorite park in Dorcester). The view is breathtaking in that region.
