Thanksgiving and Black Friday

Hello and welcome to the blog!  Hopefully everyone survived the Thanksgiving holiday.  I was invited to a co-worker’s for dinner.  Her mother did a great job of feeding the troops.  In addition to the humans, dinner was shared with two beautiful dogs, Lilly and Ferdy.  Lilly is of mixed heritage looking much like the dog Benji from the movies many years ago.  Ferdy is a black lab mix.  She apparently thought my face tasted as good as the meal.  I’ll never turn down a face lick from a dog or a cat!

Ferdy had some designs on my plate… and ended up rewarded.

Thanksgiving was a great chance to rest up a bit.  Then I worked Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Black Friday was surprisingly easy.  It was not as busy at the farm store as it was at Walmart.  But Saturday was a killer;  I put in 12 hours.  It was the hardest I can ever remember working at any job for that duration.  It makes a difference when you like what you do and are told daily how you’re appreciated.  🙂

Today, Monday, is a good day to rest up and be comfortable.  The weather is crappy here (it’s raining a like cow peeing on a flat rock) so the intended fishing can wait until next weekend.   The plan was to sleep in but the brain woke up early at 4:00 AM.  It was a good time to get some cooking started.

Ken C., a local farmer, had dropped off a frozen rabbit for me at the farm store on Saturday.  I thawed it and cooked the lagomorph in the slow cooker with cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, rice, a bit of dijon mustard, shallots, and some mushrooms.  Talk about yummy food on a cold day!  Even Jesse enjoyed a little plate of bunny meat.  (He’s still deteriorating and I’m afraid will not make it through the winter but his appetite is still good.)

You can make much more than pizza with a Presto Pizza Pizzazz.

Once up and about this morning, I used a Black Friday acquisition to make some cinnamon rolls for the friends at McDonalds.  For a great price, $27.99, I’d purchased a Presto Pizza Pizzazz on a Black Friday ad.  I love the machine!  So far it’s also made pizza, quesadillas, chicken nuggets, and Jesse’s favorite – frozen batter dipped fish fillets.  The pizzazz will go along on the next camping trip later in the week.  I’ve got an idea for a tasty and convenient breakfast food.

“Her Pillow”- The cats’ Black Friday present of a cushy dog bed. Jennifer has dozens of “Beanie Babies” and they keep showing up all over the house!

Besides the Black Friday dog bed for the cats (they also got 2 cat condos), I bought another comfort aid – this one for use in the house and van.  At work we were running the “My Pillow” product for $39.99.  This product has been advertised a lot and it seems to live up to his name.  I’ll be trying this one out next weekend, too.  More about that later.

That’s about all for now.  The fall season is winding down and soon it will be winter.  It’s time to camp again before things get too much colder.  The beautiful Christmas light display is on now in Decorah and I plan to be there over the coming weekend to see it.  There should be some good pictures.

Thanks for stopping by today.  Stay safe over the holidays!  Safe and happy travels!

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"

Sad to hear Jesse is deteriorating (but hurray for those very Scandinavian looking cinnamon buns!).

Thank you. He’s slowly fading but we’re enjoying each other’s company along the path. it’s a beautiful journey. Jenny is good to him, too. The cinnamon rolls were tasty – I had to sample them!

Sounds like you had a great Thanksgiving. I like that pizza pizzazz. You sure worked hard on Sat. and I am happy your resting up now. Our weather is pretty cold here right now for Tucson and I have another cold of course if I would stay home and rest up it might help. NAAA hehe
I’ll be looking forward to seeing your Christmas light pictures.

Hi Jo and thanks for the note. It’s turned nasty cold here – high winds and 20s… We had 8 tornadoes in Iowa last night (mainly west of here) I’m not ready for winter yet! It looks like there is much to do in Decorah including a gingerbread event, and several other Christmas-related activities. It should be fun and yield some good pictures… I’m not sure about the MyPillow… Most of me feels better except for a headache this morning. ??
