Fixing the Director’s Chair

Fresh blackberries ripe for the picking!

Hello and welcome to the blog!  It’s been a busy week.  Starting on Wednesday we have been busy at work with the many travelers coming to see the Great Jones County Fair.  This weekend “Kid Rock”  and “Ted Nugent” were performing.  Kid Rock drew a crowd of around 50,000 people.  I think half of them wanted to use the bathroom at work!

I clean the lobby at the restaurant twice a day with a 3 hour break between.  Today instead of taking the usual nap, I drove over to friend Jim’s and picked a few quarts of those yummy looking blackberries, freezing them for winter.  There are so many more to pick and save!

The damaged chair

In the meantime, I had a couple hours tonight to work on a pet project – fixing my favorite fishing chair.  While camping a couple weeks ago, Jim mentioned how the chair could be repaired easily with a glove, a needle, and thread.  I cut a couple fingers off of a cheap gardening glove, slipped the pieces over the support poles, and sewed everything up.

One of the glove’s “fingers”over the pole.

The stitches were crude.  I told the neighbor the sewing looked like a blind veterinarian had tried to do a cat hysterectomy.  But the stitches held and the chair is working great.

There’s nothing like saving an item that has more good life ahead of it.  This chair was a gift from my sister just after Dad passed away.  It’s going to see many more fishing trips.

Well, it’s officially 2AM+ on Sunday morning.  We just got the restaurant closed.  There’s one more day of the fair but the busiest period is over.  Thank goodness!

On Monday I am going to visit with someone about a job that would be sit-down type work in a factory and offer a 70% or more pay increase over what I’m making now.  After that, the plan is to visit Jim, gather more berries, cook up some good food, and camp… maybe with Jennifer.  I’ve got an idea for a tasty camping breakfast that will be fun to share.

Take care and thanks for visiting!  Safe and happy camping!

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"

Oh those blackberry’s look so good. You sure did a great job fixing the chair. I see how the fingers from the glove would keep the metal from re ripping the chair what a great idea.

I hope you do well at the interview more money is nice but you have to like the work.

Can’t wait to see what your new food recipe is

Hi Jo. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I’ll likely be camping somewhere on Monday or Tuesday and am dreaming up a few new ideas. We’ll have to see how it pans out. The lows are around 55 during that period so sleeping will be delightful. Things have been crazy at work – still at the Golden Arches for now. I hope to get another post up soon. Take care! VT

Hope your interview was successful on Monday! Just got back from a wonderful camping trip to Lake Erie. You would love it–yellow perch and one of the six US cities claiming to be Walleye Capital of the World. The Little Dog and I don’t fish…we just enjoy eating it. I am going to try your smoked catfish recipe next week. I’ll be baking it in the oven, so I hope it turns out as well as yours. Have fun camping this week!

Hi and thanks for the note! The perch sound wonderful! And, of course, walleye is such good fish for eating, too! I’m burning the midnight oil at night and then plan to do some camping on Monday night… I’ve got a turkey burger recipe idea that sounds good. Take care! — VT
