Hi and welcome to the blog today. It’s actually Sunday morning and I’m waiting for the sun to come up. Friday was quite an interesting day. Jenny came with me to work and waited until late afternoon when Daddy got done working.
We were headed to Muscatine, Iowa along the Mississippi River for a two day camping and fishing trip. Hunger struck around the Iowa City area so we pulled into Lucky’s Market, a healthy food store. I bought a fresh grilled Panini sandwich and some Perrier water to enjoy on the way. By this time the sun was dropping and it was necessary to stop at a little park east of Iowa City. Jenny needed a rest break; I needed grub.
As we pulled into the roadside park, I noticed a beautiful orange cat sitting on a park bench. Cats in parks are not that common. I quickly pulled over and brought out Jenny. She is skittish around people and wanted to go back in the van right away.
The other cat’s owner, Michelle, and I struck up a conversation. She frequently brings her cat, “Trick or Treat” to the park for fresh air and exercise. Of course, the origin of Jenny’s name (“Jennifer Stefanie”) came up. Jenny was named Jennifer Stefanie after “Jennifer Hart” (played by Stefanie Powers) in the TV show “Hart to Hart”. Cat lovers are a special “breed” and it’s fun to talk kitties with other devoted owners.
After Michelle and “Trick or Treat” left, Jenny played as I started to enjoy dinner. She had to be retrieved a couple of times. Jenny has this thing about wandering over to outhouses and I’m terrified she might fall into a pit or something. Other cars had gathered at the park and nobody got in or out. Their presence kind of had me on edge so we ended the dinner break a little prematurely. This park is beautiful but has been known to attract some undesirable activities at times, none of which we wanted to be a part of!
After dinner Jenny and I headed the rest of the way to Muscatine and camped at Fairport, just north of town along the Mississippi River. Until spring, this campground will only be $11 including electricity. Some of the spots were closed due to high water covering them. The late summer / fall rains were abundant and the Mississippi was swollen beyond its banks.
Unfortunately, the neighbors were all but quiescent that night. While bursting in and out of their cockeyed trailer (covered with duct tape fixes) they were arguing loudly. The cops came and I heard discussion of drugs and alcohol. Nobody was arrested but they were commanded to stop the noise. The cops left. The fighting started back up and the noise from the crooked trailer did not cease until about 10:00. It was actually quite amusing… I frequently heard the words “f’ing drunk” being tossed around.
Jenny and I slept well after the fracas was over. Then it was on to Saturday and Sunday’s fishing and visiting our friend Johnnie. I’m at McDonald’s this Sunday morning. Now it’s off to the park to see if the fish will bite today. They weren’t too eager yesterday. There will be more pictures. We are returning home tonight to get ready for another week of work trekking.
Take care and thanks for visiting!
