Happy Labor Day… and Laboring is the Word!

Hi and welcome to the blog.  Happy Labor Day to everyone!  No matter how difficult working can be some times, hard work is generally good for a person.   🙂

The steroids over the last week have worked wonders.  The lungs are back to about 100% and I’ve got a lot more energy.  Many things were accomplished over the period.

On Thursday night I did a thorough cleaning on the old van and discarded a lot of crapola.  There were a lot of good finds – like four boxes of the same kind of freezer bags stashed in various places.  In addition, there was time to deodorize the carpeting and get it smelling less “manly” for the next outing.

Old (above) vs new

Friday night’s progress was epic compared to the energy level the last few weeks.  I decided to beautify the decaying Chevy emblem on the front of the Express van.  It was a simple matter of masking the area and spraying some blue metallic Rustoleum paint over the old yellowed “bowtie”.

The unsightly rust is covered and the new color goes well with the hub covers!

That really energized me.  The next step was to pull off all four hub covers (total 32 plastic bolts), clean the rims, mask the tires, and spray them with a nice metallic paint… but nothing gaudy.  Paper towels were stuffed inside the holes near the brake parts to avoid any damage to the rotors, calipers, or brake linings.  The guys at work paid some very nice compliments!  The rims look a lot nicer now!  It took 90 minutes to do all four wheels.  I was pooped.   🙂

Cleaning up a few things here and there on the solar panel rack.

There was one more pet project in mind.  The wood rack that holds the solar panel got a thorough inspection and a new coat of paint tonight (Sunday).  It’s held together well for about 8 years now and is going strong!

Jenny checking out the wildlife from the deck at home. She’s ready to go camping later this week!

As of right now it’s late on Sunday night.  I was considering camping tonight but who wants to go out on a busy holiday weekend?  As luck would have it, Wednesday and Thursday are days off this week.  The temp will be 72.  Jenny and I will be hitting the pond at Jim’s in search of fish and snapping turtles.  With lows in the upper 50s, the weather couldn’t be nicer.   It’s going to be a great autumn season.

That’s it for now.  Take care and thanks for visiting today.  There should be some good food to cook up for the outing on Wednesday.  Happy Labor Day!

About VanTrekker

I am a former vandweller in Eastern Iowa who, for several years (off and on), lived in a 2007 Chevy cargo van. I still travel around Iowa with my tortoise shell cat, Jennifer Stefanie. Our favorite place to explore is the Country Heritage Community, the four far northeastern counties of Iowa (Clayton, Winneshiek, Allamakee, and Fayette). Ride along as we fish in pristine trout streams, enjoy fine home cooked camping meals, and meet new people. It's all possible on a shoestring budget. Happy travels always! --- Brad, the "Van Trekker"

Say “Hi” to Jim for us. It doesn’t look like we’ll have time to get over your way before cold weather, but maybe next year we can do it. Happy Labor Day!

Hi John! It was a good labor day. I did some more work on cleaning the van (more to go), mowed the yard and helped at the neighbor lady’s. I feel like a teenager again and am ready to get out there and fish, camp, fish, and repeat. I’ll definitely tell Jim you said hi. We’re going to have some T-bones and packet potatoes… maybe some corn on the cob, too. Take care! — VT

Man send me some of that energy. Nice job on cleaning up the van. Wheels look really nice and the blue makes such a big difference. I sure wish we were having those great temps here. It may last yet this month of triple digits or very high 90’s.

Have fun this week at Jim’s place.

Hi Jo! Well, the last energy’s from the steroids is about gone.. But oh, the breathing is better and I’m ready for some outdoor fun now. It was nice to get some things done. It sounds like it’s still pretty hot there. We’re in the clear in that regard.

Have a good week! I hope it cools off for you!

8 years since you built the van? I can’t believe it. I remember it, it does not feel that long ago. Time sure flies. Here’s to the next eight!

Hi Viking girl! Time sure does fly. That’s only been 4164 jobs ago for me. 🙂 But every day can be a good day. They sure don’t seem to get much easier though. Take care! Have a good one! 🙂 🙂
